Chapter Nine

Gale

I hate being apart from Sophia and the others right now. It doesn’t feel right. It feels like we could be finding a bloodbath when we return there. That because I’m not with Sophia, that the old woman or someone from the soldiers might still kill her. At the same time, I know that the woman meant what she said, she meant all of it, but that doesn’t mean she can’t change her mind.

But Kieran and I were the only logical choices to go up here. We’re still dressed, even though Kieran’s clothes are caked with half-dried blood, and Topaz and Lyell’s shifted forms might still come in handy down there. Lyell’s skills with people, calming people down, are definitely going to be useful there.

Kieran and I used an elevator which came out to a small open area at the other side of the mountain from where we went in. It seems like this entryway isn’t used much, if I go by how overgrown it is. It looks more like a quick way in and out for someone in charge, it’s not big enough for a group of people and definitely not big enough to transport dragons through.

Kieran grabs his phone, immediately calling Finn, while I grab my phone to call Agate, since she’s the only real contact we still have in the town right now.

“Gale.” Agate picks up immediately. “How are they? What happened?”

“They’re fine. We’re all safe and fine. I’ll explain it once we get back, but we need a lot of people here as soon as possible. We need healers. We need beds, blankets, food, everything. We found a big labyrinth of tunnels under the mountain and there are a lot of researchers here who are going to need a place to stay for the time being. Some of the rebels who followed us have gotten hurt, a few didn’t make it. But mostly, we’re fine.”

Agate is quiet for a while, then she speaks up again. “Lapis and Onyx?”

“They’re safe. They’re still down in the tunnels with Sophia.”

“Gaia’s parents?”

I take a moment to think on how to answer that. “We don’t know yet. We’ll try to find out as soon as possible. We just wanted to get more people here first. We can worry about other things after that. It’ll get dark soon and we’ve got a lot of people to take care of.” I glance at Kieran, who frowns, shaking his head hard as he’s on his phone too. “I’ll send you the coordinates of the entrance to the building. Please send people as soon as possible, maybe use the same trucks as we used to get to the town, and get the word out to nearby rebel groups. We’re going to need everyone we can get for this.” There might be more than a hundred researchers in those tunnels and then we’ve still got dragons and others to take care of, and of course the guards and soldiers... That’s a lot of people.
